When people think of whale watching, they think Depoe Bay. Self-proclaimed as the whale watching capital of Oregon, Depoe Bay is the premier destination for those seeking to catch sight of the great whale migration.

To enhance your whale watching experience, we’ve put together a few tips for whale watching in Depoe Bay.

WHALE WATCHING SEASON

Your chances for seeing whales in Depoe Bay year-round are high but there are certain times of the year that are better than others.

From mid-March to the end of May, you’ll see gray whales migrating to Alaska from Mexico. The moms and calves tend to stay closer to shore, only one to three miles out, providing excellent viewing opportunities.

May through the end of summer, visitors will get a chance to see our resident whales that make the Oregon Coast their home for a few months. Again, these whales tend to stick closer to shore, making them easier to spot. This is also the time when whale watching tour companies run tours every day, making this the premier time for whale watching in Depoe Bay.

As the summer ends, you might have to wait until December or into early February to watch as the whales make their way to back to Mexico. The whales in the winter tend to be found a bit further out from shore, making them a bit harder to spot.

WHALES YOU WILL SEE

Whales that are mostly visible in Depoe Bay are gray whales, with possibilities of seeing humpbacks, minkes, sperm whales, orcas, and blue whales

WHAT TO BRING

For optimal viewing during your whale watching excursion there are a few essentials you should pack:

  • Binoculars – First be sure to grab a pair of binoculars. While you will most likely be able to catch a glimpse of the whales from shore with your naked eye, having a pair of binoculars will help spot those whales further from shore.
  • Sunglasses – Contrary to popular belief, we do have sunny days here in Oregon and you wouldn’t want to miss the action because of the sun glare off the ocean. So, bring a pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes as you scan the waters.
  • Camera – It didn’t happen if you don’t have a picture to prove it, right? No, but it is nice to capture these magnificent moments, so grab your camera or your smartphone and start snapping away.
  • Warm clothing – Be sure to dress warmly. The winds off the ocean can be cool, especially if you are on a boat tour. Wear clothing that has wicking material to help stay dry.
  • Sunscreen – You most likely will be out all day trying to spot whales so be sure to bring sun protection for your face and lips.
