How to See Whales Year-Round in Oregon

Image of a whale tale dipping into the water.

There’s nothing better than looking out at the Pacific Ocean and seeing a whale splash by. It’s always a majestic sight! It’s always best to have a lucky pair of binoculars with you, but the biggest question is, where can you see whales year-round in Oregon?

Cape Foulweather

Right off the Pacific Coast Scenic Byway rests Cape Foulweather. Known for being the first land formation found in the state, this area hosts a beautiful view of the Oregon coast. Otter Crest State Scenic Viewpoint is located here and is a perfect spot to see whales swim by!

Ecola State Park

Ecola State Park not only hosts great spots for a picnic or trails to walk, but it’s also an optimal location for whale watching. There are many spots to keep a lookout for the sea creatures on the north end of their beach. You’ll often spot them during their migration.

Sea Lion Caves

The Sea Lion Caves lives up to its name by being the habitat for sea lions, but it hosts great opportunities to see whales! The vast ocean views give you ample opportunities to see a whale spouting further away in the waters. Gray whales frequent the area the most, but killer whales swim by on a very rare occasion.

Cape Meares Lighthouse

Cape Meares Lighthouse is another scenic spot perfect for a stroll and setting your sights on passing by whales. They host Whale Watch Week during the spring and volunteers are stationed around the area to assist in spotting the animals. Other wildlife can be spotted here such as murres and various other seabirds.

Depoe Bay

Depoe Bay is the whale-watching capital of Oregon! The Whale Watching Center is located there and its large viewing deck is the best place to spot some whales. Gray Whales are the most common type to see swim by, but you may also see humpback whales and dolphins move along too.
