Depoe Bay Whale Migrations Explained

During the winter, whales can typically be seen traveling from Alaska down to the warmer waters of Mexico. Once they make it to their destination, they take this time to mate and enjoy the tropical climate. As winter blooms into spring, whales make their way back up north with their newborn calves in tow.

What Whales to See

Gray whales are the most common whale to see during the winter migration season. You can identify them by watching how often they peek up from the water. Typically, they poke up every 20 seconds. Another way to spot a gray whale is by the power of its spout; it can reach up to 12 feet!

Where to See the Whales

The Whale Watching Center in Depoe Bay is the central hub for observing whale migrations. The center hosts Whale Watching Week in late December and volunteers eagerly assist visitors with the best whale-watching experience.

Natural areas such as Cape Foulweather and Devils Punchbowl State Natural Area host perfect opportunities to whale watch. It’s a magical experience gazing out onto the water surrounded by the beautiful Oregon nature.

Is This the Only Time of Year to Whale Watch?

Wintertime isn’t the only time of year to see whales in Depoe Bay! While whales spend most of the winter in the south, they return to the north starting in mid-March. This migratory pattern lasts till late May, and the whales stay close to Depoe Bay till October.
