5 Popular Viewpoints on the Central Oregon Coast

The picturesque coastline of Oregon is one big reason visitors flock to the Pacific Northwest every year. While any vantage point along the coast is a great spot to enjoy the stunning scenery, here are a few of our favorite viewpoints on the Central Oregon Coast!

Boiler Bay State Scenic Viewpoint

Roughly one mile north of Depoe Bay is Boiler Bay State Scenic Viewpoint. The area features a rugged coastline and scenic bluffs with panoramic views, making it a great place to watch the intense surf action up close and spot gray whales. As you might’ve guessed, it’s best known for its series of viewpoints from gently sloping basalt cliffs. The furthest western tip and the northern face overlooking the bay are the top scenic highlights of the area.

Rocky Creek State Scenic Viewpoint

Rocky Creek State Scenic Viewpoint offers a breathtaking view that brings you close to the action. The black sharp lava rocks clearly define the intersection of sea and land! Here you can gain front row seats to some of the best whale-watching spots along the Oregon Coast. The irregular cliffs are just as admirable! Lining the shoreline are the birds, sea lions, and harbor seals that can be found nestled amongst the offshore rocks.

Devil’s Punchbowl State Natural Area

While it’s not one of the highest viewpoints on the coast, The Devil’s Punchbowl is a unique view all on its own. Its large bowl-like structure is naturally carved into the rock and was created over time by the collapse of two sea caves, all shaped by the wind and waves. This landmark is a natural phenomenon with the impressive force of the waves crashing into the bowl, filling it up at high tide. Because of its unobstructed views from the trails, it’s the perfect place to take in the views and keep your eye out for migrating whales.

Cape Perpetua

Take in some of the best views along the Central Oregon Coast at Cape Perpetua Scenic Area. While not all the trails guide you along the coast, the extensive trail system offers some of the best coastal views in the state. Enjoy 26 miles of trails that cut through the thick rainforest of the Siuslaw National Forest to the top of the cape. See several unique landmarks including Thor’s Well, Devil’s Churn, Spouting Horn, and Cape Cove, all making this area one of the most scenic areas on the coast.
