Exploring Majestic Lighthouses on Oregon Coast

Ligthhouse seen through hazy mist of breaking waves

When it comes to coastal beauty, few places compare to the breathtaking Oregon Coast. Stretching over 360 miles, this rugged coastline is not just famous for its dramatic cliffs and serene beaches but also for its iconic lighthouses. These lighthouses on Oregon Coast have guided mariners through treacherous waters for centuries, and today, they stand as historic treasures, offering a glimpse into the past and some of the most stunning vistas imaginable.

Yaquina Head Lighthouse: A Beacon of Beauty

Nestled on a basalt headland, Yaquina Head Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in Oregon, standing proudly at 93 feet. Located just three miles north of Newport, this lighthouse is not only a marvel of engineering but also a gateway to some of the most spectacular ocean views.

As you approach Yaquina Head, the lighthouse rises above the landscape, its white tower stark against the blue sky. Once you step inside, the spiral staircase invites you to ascend and take in the breathtaking 360-degree views from the top. On a clear day, the panoramic view stretches across the Pacific, with the occasional sighting of migrating whales.

But Yaquina Head isn’t just about the lighthouse. The surrounding area, known as the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area, offers tide pools brimming with colorful sea life, hiking trails, and a visitor center where you can learn more about the lighthouse’s history and the area’s natural wonders.

Heceta Head Lighthouse: A Cliffside Gem

Continuing our journey south, we come to the Heceta Head Lighthouse, perched on a cliff 205 feet above the ocean. This stunning lighthouse, located near Florence, is often hailed as the most photographed lighthouse in the United States, and for a good reason.

The hike up to Heceta Head is part of the adventure, winding through lush forests and emerging onto a cliff with jaw-dropping ocean views. The lighthouse itself is a beautifully restored beacon, its light still active, casting a guiding beam 21 miles out to sea.

Cape Meares Lighthouse: A Coastal Treasure

Our final stop takes us to the Cape Meares Lighthouse, located near Tillamook. Although it’s one of the shortest lighthouses on the coast, standing at just 38 feet, its clifftop location at 217 feet above the sea gives it an imposing presence.

Cape Meares offers a unique blend of history and natural beauty. The lighthouse, built in 1890, still houses its original Fresnel lens, a masterpiece of glasswork. The surrounding Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint provides a chance to explore hiking trails, spot diverse wildlife, and even visit the famous “Octopus Tree,” a uniquely shaped Sitka spruce.

The lighthouse’s vantage point offers spectacular views of the Pacific, especially at sunset when the sky blazes with color, making it a must-visit for photographers and nature lovers alike.
