All You Need to Know About the King Tides of the Oregon Coast

The King Tides have arrived! This natural phenomenon is wonderful to see but must be done so in a safe manner. Here’s what you need to know about the King Tides of the Oregon Coast.

So, what exactly are the King Tides of the Oregon Coast?

The King Tides refer to the three biggest tide sequences that occur each winter. The tides happen when the moon is closest to the Earth, typically occurring during a new moon phase. The powerful gravitational pull results in higher-than-normal tides. The higher-than-normal tide combined with heavy winds and abundant storms can generate waves reaching as high as 35 feet! It’s truly a spectacular sight to see!

Where to watch the King Tides

The Spouting Horn in Depoe Bay.

While the entire 362 miles of Oregon coastline can provide you with the opportunities to see these massive tides, one of the best places for visiting the King Tides of the Oregon Coast is right here in Depoe Bay. The seawall that runs through the center of town is the perfect place to catch the tides in action. The tides flood the natural rock that makes up the wall, making geyser-like sprays that spout water onto the other side of Highway 101.

A few other notable spots for viewing include:

  • Haystack Rock in the north coast
  • Seal Rock and Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area (both near Depoe Bay along the Central Coast).
  • Samuel Boardman State Scenic Corridor (South Coast)

Remember, safety first

While viewing the King Tides is spectacular it can also be dangerous. There are a few key points to keep in mind so that you can view the tides safely:

  • Always check the tide times. NOAA offers a great resource for knowing when the tides will hit.
  • Never turn your back on the ocean.
  • View from a distance
  • Watch for sneaker waves
  • Do not walk out on jetties or rock surfaces as they will be slippery
  • Wear sturdy closed-toed shoes and rain gear to help stay dry
  • Bring your camera but remember protective gear to keep it from getting wet
