Your Guide to Visiting the Yaquina Head Lighthouse

Yaquina Head Lighthouse is a true treat along the Oregon Coast. While there are many lighthouses that dot Oregon’s rugged shoreline, the Yaquina Head Lighthouse is one that offers plenty of opportunities for viewing and learning.

History

The Yaquina Head Lighthouse stands as the tallest lighthouse in Oregon at 93 feet tall. Its bright beacon of light has been guiding ships along the west coast for nearly 150 years. First lit in 1873, the lighthouse was originally powered by oil and took roughly one year to build and over 370,000 bricks to construct.

Today the fully automated first-order Fresnel lens runs automatically and flashes a patterned light every day. The light shines over 160 feet above the ocean and can be seen 19 miles out to sea.

Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area

The entire natural area extends out from the Oregon Coast, a mile into the Pacific Ocean. To view the lighthouse up close, use the paved path that leads to the top of the hill within the Yaquina Bay State Park. But it’s not just the lighthouse that puts on a spectacular display, the park claims one of the most spectacular views along the coast, perfect for viewing ocean wildlife. Watch as sea birds swarm the coast’s rocky shores, barking harbor seals, and even wading in colorful tide pools (at low tide).

The interpretive center within the park features educational exhibits on marine life and seabirds, plus human history of the area.

Haunted? You decide.

Legends of Yaquina Head Lighthouse linger about and can make for a spooky place on a dark, cold, and windy night. One of the more popular stories that have made its rounds is of a workman falling from the scaffolding into the hollow space between the masonry walls where his body could not be retrieved. Some feel this story helps explain the ghostly activity the lighthouse seems to host.
